US$10 million for new vehicles

HARARE - Zanu (PF) has splashed out more than US$10 million to acquire  currency 220 new vehicles for party officials ahead of the 2008 elections.

The vehicles were imported through a Zanu (PF)-owned company, Amalgamated Motor Industries (AMC).

The double and single-cab trucks will be distributed to provincial women and youth league officials, war collaborators and ex-detainees.

As has been its practice in the past, the ruling party will also have access to government and municipal trucks, which are normally commandeered to ferry party supporters at election time.

It is understood the money was sourced through the Reserve Bank as Zimbabwe as the country’s economy staggers to a complete halt for want of foreign exchange. – Staff reporter
