By the time Mugabe arrived at teh Zimbabwe Grounds in
the afternoon, about 40 000 people had gathered, but
the majority of them having been force-marched to the
venue in order to give an impression of massive
support for Mugabe, who has been facing stiff
resistance from within his party to his plans of
making himself a life president.
The ruling party’s political commissar, Elliot
Manyika, who is also a leading member of the Mugabe
faction, addressed the gathering before Mugabe and
said the aged leader was supposed to rule the country
unchallenged. “We are not going to listen to Blair or
Bush and we know that there is no other leader besides
Cde Mugabe,” he said.
