World Human Rights day by Vhitori

HARARE
Police are planning to bar an arts festival organised
to commemorate World Human Rights day by Vhitori
Entertainment, at which they plan to honour musicians
actors and journalists who have stood firm in the
defence of human rights in the country.

Vhitori Entertainment coordinator, Silvanos Mudzvova

told The Zimbabwean that the authorities at Harare

Central Police Station have been sitting on their

request to have the event, which is set for next week,

cleared. It has emerged that police are planning to

bar the event unles the organisers prove that it wont

be deemed to be anti-President Robert Mugabe.

“We are not yet aware of whether it will go ahead,”

police spokesman Wayne Bvudzijena said. “But they have

to really explain the approach and thrust, which are

not clear as yet.”

Vhitori have lined up performances by artist as well

as the premiering of plays critical of the Mugabe

regime’s abuse of human and political rights. The

entertainment group says it wants to honour

individuals and organisations that have showed a

resolve to fight for human rights in the country.

Harare has gained bad reputation for sustained abuses

of Mugabe’s political opponents and members of civil

society that are critical of its excesses.
