Zanu commandeers UZ residences for congress

HARARE - The University of Zimbabwe will host the majority of Zanu (PF) delegates attending the party's Special Congress at its halls of residence at the campus it has been established.

Sources said the development was likely to affect the students who will be writing their end of semester examinations starting next week.

“One wonders whether those halls were built for Zanu (PF) supporters or for students. This semester has been the most difficult one for me and I wish if this was the last semester for me here,” said one student.

The halls of residence were closed on June 9 this year leaving a number of students homeless. Many dropped out as a result.

The Congress, whose main agenda is the ratification of President Robert Mugabe’s candidature for next year’s elections, will be held at the City Sports Centre in Harare from 11 to 15 December.  Ruling party sources have revealed that the delegates are expected to arrive in the capital from December 10.

Zanu (PF) secretary for administration Didymus Mutasa yesterday said also to be discussed at the congress was the selection of parliamentary candidates and other electoral issues.

When this reporter visited the UZ campus, all the halls were locked with the main dining hall, which was gutted by fire in April, still not repaired. Sources the accommodation crisis had forced a number of students to drop out of their studies.

“The situation here is terrible as some of us are commuting from Marondera daily only to find no lecturers around,” said a male student who insisted on anonymity. – Own correspondent
