Chivasa faces trumped-up charges – Madhuku

MASVINGO - The trial of National Constitutional Assembly (NCA) spokesman Maddock Chivasa on charges of allegedly telling police officers that they were "Mugabe's dogs" failed to take off here last week because of a power outage.

Chivasa appeared before Masvingo Magistrate Patrick Mapiye last week facing charges of insulting the police.

The charges being leveled against Chivasa have been described as “manifestly unfounded” by the pro-democracy NCA.
Chivasa is being charged under the notorious Public Order and Security Act (POSA), a draconian law often employed by government to clamp down on protests by opponents.
NCA chairman, Dr Lovemore Madhuku, said Chivasa was facing trumped up charges.
“The charges against Chivasa resemble desperate efforts by the regime in trying to silence voices of those calling for a new people driven democratic constitution which all citizens will participate in,” Madhuku said.
Magistrate Mapiye adjourned the trial to March 3. Chivasa is being represented by Philip Shumba of Mwonzora and Associates.
