Econet plans big

ZIMBABWE'S largest mobile telecommunication company, Econet Wireless Zimbabwe has said it was planning to increase its subscribers to 1,2 million by the end of the first half of 2008 to cater for the high numbers of potential subscribers requesting services but had not been accommodated due to incapacity by the company's network.

The number of customers hooked to the telecommunication concern lies at just under 1 million but is experiencing serious congestion on the network, characteristic of the industry in the country.

Econet Wireless Chief Executive Officer Douglas Mboweni said the company had also tabled plans to expand the network to accommodate the expected increase in subscribers and equipment had already been imported to start the “accelerated growth”.

He however indicated that the growth of the mobile telecommunications sector in Zimbabwe hinged on government setting viable tariffs to allow the networks to generate enough revenue to service the systems.

Zimbabwe has three mobile telephone networks-Telecel, NetOne and Econet but Econet commands about 61 percent market share of the entire market.
