HARARE
The central part of Harare was precariously scaling on
a knife-edge by midday on Wednesday with serious
tension as hordes of armed riot police sealed it off
whilst hundreds of MDC (Tsvangirai) activists gathered
at the party headquarters waiting for a court ruling
on an urgent application seeking for an interdict
against police's decision to bar a march.

MDC president Morgan Tsvangirai’s whereabouts were
unknown after a pre-dawn raid at his home by armed
police who arrested him. MDC lawyer, Alec Muchadehama
said they were still battling in court trying to
secure the release of Tsvangirai as well as a go-ahead
to hold the march.
“We are still waiting for the court to rule on the
matters,” he said briefly through a telephone
interview.
Police spokesman, Wayne Bvudzijena had issued a press
statement saying the MDC planned march was cancelled
because, “of statements made over the weekend
indicating an intention to cause security problems”.
Bvudzijena strangely professed ignorance over
Tsvangirai’s arrest when contacted for comment in the
morning on Wednesday.
Meanwhile, riot police were harassing people in the
central part of the city and had confiscated three
cameras from unidentified individuals seen taking
photographs. Two huge trucks filled with riot police
were parked right at Harvest House, the MDC
headquarters.
