Massive staff shortage hits UZ

HARARE - A serious exodus of administrative of administrative staff has hit the University of Zimbabwe (UZ) resulting in some departments being closed.

According to an official at the university, most administrative staff members did not return to work following the opening of the college early this year as they sought greener pastures elsewhere.

“Most employers are disgruntled about the poor salaries and did not bother to report for work,” said the official who declined to be identified.

As a result authorities were busy running around trying to recruit replacement staff.

He said the UZ was in need of nearly 100 secretaries for all departments at the college and over 10 wardens for the halls of residences among other critical positions.

The UZ has over the years been rocked by a number of problems, which include the non-availability of lecturers and low morale among the staff due to political bungling by the government and Zanu (PF) officials. – Trust Matsilele
