MDC plans march

HARARE - The MDC is planning to stage a peaceful "New Zimbabwe Freedom March " in Harare next Wednesday, to test government's sincerity following the enactment of amendments to the Public Order and Security Act allowing peaceful processions.

Well-attended MDC rallies at the weekend, such as this one in Glen
View, have injected new enthusiasm and hope into Zimbabweans worn out by
months of battling for basics such as water, food, fuel and cash.

MDC secretary-general Tendai Biti praised the police and said they had been “very co-operative” and had worked out modalities for crowd control. Police on cycle patrol are expected to provide escort while the MDC has also requested the Police Band during the procession, which will be addressed by MDC leader Morgan Tsvangirai.
“The march will also be a call for a new Constitution, a free and fair election and the restoration of our dignity as a people,” Biti told The Zimbabwean. “We want conditions that will allow a free and fair election not a predetermined result.”
Biti, who is also Harare East MP, said the route that has been chosen for the procession, expected to dwarf the ruling party’s flopped “million men march,” was a “revolutionary route”.
The procession will start at Harvest House, the MDC headquarters in central Harare, up Nelson Mandela, then into Sam Nujoma, into Samora Machel then up Rotten Row, past the ruling party headquarters and then into the Belvedere Road. The march will end at the car park adjacent to the City Sports Centre. Tsvangirai will then address the hundreds of thousands expected to take part in the Freedom March. – Chief reporter
