Mthombeni dies

HARARE - Veteran trade unionist, Getrude Mthombeni, who was also an MDC (Tsvangirai) national executive member, has died in a Bulawayo Hospital.

“This is a great loss to the MDC,” said spokesman Nelson Chamisa. At the time of her death, Mthombeni was the MDC Shadow Minister for Labour. The party said she was also an active member of the MDC provincial structures in Bulawayo.MDC deputy president Thokozani Khupe, who is also Makokoba MP, said she was deeply saddened to hear of the death of Mthombeni.”She was a dedicated cadre who was committed to the party since its formation,” Khupe said. “She was a well-liked and much respected MDC national executive member who was deeply committed to the party, serving it with dedication and distinction. She will be missed by everyone who knew her.”
Leading pro-democracy group, Crisis in Zimbabwe Coalition, also issued a condolence message to the family and colleagues of the “distinguished trade unionist.”
Crisis in Zimbabwe Coalition said Mthombeni, who was a founding member of the MDC, unequivocally fought for a democratic society in Zimbabwe.
“Her guidance and courageous contributions in the fight for democracy will be solely missed by not only her colleagues and family but by the nation at large,” Crisis Coalition coordinator Jacob Mafume said. – Chief reporter
