NCA ZIMBABWE TASKFORCE RESOLUTIONS ON THE COMING ELECTIONS

The National Constitution Assembly's taskforce over the weekend agreed unanimously that the coming elections if held under the present flawed process would result in yet another contested legitimacy.

On its Saturday meeting the NCA agreed that unless a new constitution in Zimbabwe is written before the election the current crisis will continue as the results would be heavily contested and that results would continue favoring the few social elites than the entire citizenship. The NCA called on all Zimbabweans to participate in a demand for a new people driven and democratic constitutions which would assist in bringing both economic and political sanity in the country. “The NCA does not seek political power hence leveling political processes remains a prerogative of the opposition and ruling party. But as the NCA we will continue calling for a new constitution,” was part of the resolution. The NCA does not have a mandate of barring those who want to participate in elections guided under flawed processes but remain steadfast in urging all Zimbabweans to participate in a democratic, transparent and a well accountable order. It is a worry to the NCA that political machinations and chicanery of the ruling party will allow a few Members of Parliament to come from the opposition so as to legitimize the polls. As the NCA we will continue to reiterate that legitimacy of any election is drawn from sound constitutionalism thus even if the opposition or all democratic MPs win the elections the outcome will remain on principle morally illegitimate. It is the NCA’s submission that this coming election should have been used as a platform to rebuild the nation, curve a prosperous destiny for the nation and legitimize all government institutions. This can only be done by allowing the people of Zimbabwe to exercise their democratic right if participatory democracy by giving them a chance to write their own constitution.  However the events on the ground show that there is no political will power to solve the current national crisis as supported by the exclusion of the demands of the bigger population of the citizenry. The NCA just as in the past would also want those who will either emerge winners or losers in the flawed process who however believes in the democratic order and constitutionalism to join forces and continue clamoring for a new people driven constitution.
