Police Intimidation Despite Court Ruling

HARARE
Stunned and embarrassed by the ruling by a Harare Magistrate giving permission to the MDC to hold a rally and the subsequent show of strength through
massive numbers proceeding to the Glamis Arena, police embarked on a campaign in the city centre to intimidate people and threatening them in order to
prevent them from attending.

In addition to MDC activists, numbering over 50 000 that had camped at Harvest House since morning, hundreds of thousands of vendors and other people in the city centre promptly joined in the march towards the venue.

However, armed riot police roamed the streets in trucks and on foot and tried to disperse the crowds proceeding towards the venue.

Police spokesman Wayne Bvudzijena declined to comment when contacted for comment after the court ruling.

A massive crowd was expected to descend at the Glamis Arena at Harare Showgrounds for an address by Tsvangirai.
