* Egypt midfielder Mohamed Barakat has been ruled out of this month’s African Nations Cup finals in Ghana because of a knee injury. Barakat, who helped Egypt to win the tournament two years ago, will instead be travelling to Germany for an operation, his club Al Ahli of Cairo said on Friday.
Egypt are still hoping that striker Ahmed ‘Mido’ Hossam, who plays for English club Middlesbrough, will recover from a groin injury in time for the start of the tournament on Jan. 20.

* Zambia midfielder Andrew Sinkala has withdrawn from African Nations Cup finals after being hospitalised with a chest infection, the Football Association of Zambia said. There is also doubt about the availability of the country’s other German-based player, defender Moses Sichone, who is recovering from a rib injury and failed to join Zambia’s pre-tournament preparations in Spain. Sinkala is from second division SC Paderborn while Sichone plays at Kickers Offenbach.
 
* South Africa and Everton midfielder Steven Pienaar (25) wants to be given special permission to delay his departure for the African Nations Cup. He wants to play against Chelsea in the Carling Cup before linking up with his South African team-mates. The South African squad come together tomorrow (5 January) but, with the Carling Cup semi-final clash occurring three days later, Pienaar hopes a compromise can be reached.
* Ghana coach Claude LeRoy has named his injured captain Stephen Appiah in a 28-man line up for the Nations Cup. Appiah has been told he has no chance of playing because of long-standing injury problems, but Leroy wants him to act as an inspiration to the squad.

* Cameroon have cancelled their pre-Nations Cup training camp in Kenya, because of the post-election violence in the country. The Indomitable Lions were to train at high altitude in Kenya. Coach Otto Pfister has announced that the team will instead prepare for the Nations Cup in Burkina Faso’s capital, Ouagadougou.

* Moroccan Striker Youssef Hadji is his country to win the African Nations Cup in Ghana next month. The Atlas Lions have an amazingly poor Nations Cup record despite their reputation as one of Africa’s giants. They won the tournament but have appeared in just one other final, losing to hosts Tunisia in 2004.

1) MIDDLE-DISTANCE runner Sharon Taengwa finished a credible second in the São Silvestre New Year’s Eve 15km Road Race in Luanda, Angola.
Kenya’s Grace Monany beat the Zimbabwean athlete to the gold medal in the women’s category of the race.
Taengwa arrived in Luanda on Monday afternoon just a few hours before the race, which started at around 5pm on the same day with over 800 athletes from Mozambique, Brazil, Cape Verde, Portugal and Angola taking part.
Kenya’s Eliajah Nyabuti won the men’s race ahead of Tony Wamulwa of Zambia and Angola’s João Ntyamba.
Taengwa flew from Kenya where she had been training.
Wirimai Juwawo, who was supposed to represent Zimbabwe in the men’s section, failed to travel to Luanda after the National Athletics Association of Zimbabwe was said to have botched his travel arrangements.
The organisers of the race in Angola had complimentary tickets for two athletes Juwawo and Taengwa and the third one for Titus Madzingo, who was supposed to travel to Luanda as their team manager.
But the pair of Madzingo and Juwawo ended up being stranded in Harare when they could not access their air tickets from Angolan Airlines’ offices.
Had NAAZ tried to get the ticket for Juwawo before Christmas, the athlete might have taken part.
In the 2006 edition, Kudakwashe Shoko also failed to travel for the same event because NAAZ left it until too late to finalise the travelling arrangements. -Simon Rusitu

2) ZIMBABWE’S number one female tennis player Cara Black and her American partner Liezel Huber got off to a winning start this year when they beat Patty Schnyder and Nicole Vaidisova in the opening round of the Mondial Australian Women’s Hardcourt tennis tournament in Gold Coast, Australia last week on Tuesday.
Black and  who are the number one seeds at the US$175 000 Tier III tournament, ensured there were no early season blues as they successfully negotiated a tricky opening-round clash with the talented wildcard pairing of Switzerland’s Schnyder and Nicole Vaidisova of the Czech Republic, winning in straight sets 6-2, 6- 3.- Simon Rusitu

3) THE national women’s volleyball squads are in camp preparing for the Olympic Games qualifiers later next week.
The women’s team is expected to leave for Algiers, Algeria this week to try and secure a berth to the Beijing Games at the African qualifiers running from January 10 to 20.
The men’s African qualifiers will be held in South Africa, from January 31 to February 10.
ZVA administrator Peter Mawere  said the women’s side will remain in camp until their departure next week while the men will only move into a closed camp later.
We have limited financial resources that could enable us to get both teams in camp at the same time.
So for a start, the women will be camping at Danhiko while the men will be meeting for regular training sessions at Richwood Park.
The men will go into camp later, said Mawere.
