Zim Mbira group confident

A NEWLY-FORMED South African-based Zimbabwean mbira musical group has vowed to shake the dog-eat-dog SA music industry.

Nyami Nyami mbira group is confident of making an impression in the industry saying the uniqueness of mbira music in this country will steer them to greater heights. The nine-member Johannesburg-based group, is following in the footsteps of such great acts as Thomas Mapfumo and Chiwoniso Maraire in promoting this proudly-Zimbabwean music genre outside the country.

Nyami Nyami, a brainchild of human-rights activist Joshua Rusere and consisting of music and drama teachers among other youths, is working on its debut album which will hit music stores later this year.

“We are well aware of the intense competition in the music industry. Nonetheless, research has shown that mbira music is unique and not fully explored in South Africa. We thus can withstand the competition. We are pleased with the support that fans have shown to this project. We are at the moment establishing a market,” said Calabash Dziripi.

Mbira music has proved to be a potentially lucrative genre in South Africa, with award-winning house group Revolution incepting the genre into their music with the assistance of Andy Brown and Maraire.
