Bread price doubles, fuel unavailable

The price of bread increased to Z$5 million on Monday as commuter fares also increased with the short distances being charged Z$4 and Z$5 million hard on the heels of the shocking rise in the rate of inflation announced by the Central Statistical Office last week - officially 66,000 percent but in reality closer to 150,000 percent (IMF figures).

Milllers increased the price of flour by up to 75% over the past week, causing bakers to pass it on to the consumer by increasing the price of bread by up to 100%. In addition to that, bakers say there is not enough flour on the market and they are having to import or purchase from black market traders at exorbitant prices.

Bread costs up to Z$7 million a loaf on the black market. This means the monthly salary of a junior policeman, Z$35 million, can only buy five loaves of bread.

The increase in commuter fares was triggered by hikes in the price of fuel on the black market. Fuel can no longer be accessed on service stations in local currency.

Chaos now dominates the market, with prices of all commodities rising on a daily basis by huge margins in response to the wanton splashing of salary increments by the Zanu (PF) regime to civil servants for populist purposes.
