Chibvuri trial postponed again

PLUMTREE - The trial of journalist Bright Chibvuri on charges of practicing journalism without official accreditation has been postponed to February 28.

Chibvuri, editor of the Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions (ZCTU) newspaper, The Worker, appeared before Plumtree resident magistrate Mark Dzira on February 1 facing allegations of breaching Section 83 of the repressive Access to Information and Protection of Privacy Act (AIPPA).

Chibvuri was arrested in Plumtree on 3 March 2007 and spent two nights in police custody. At the time of his arrest, he had applied for accreditation but had not received a response from the Media and Information Commission (MIC), but was eventually duly accredited.

He joins a growing list of journalists in Zimbabwe who have fallen foul of the repressive media laws.
