Matibenga Bounces Back

HARARE
Ousted chairperson of the MDC (Tsvangirai) Women's
League, Lucia Matibenga has resurrected her political
life after winning that party's primary election and
gaining the right to represent it in Kuwadzana East.

The Zimbabwean witnessed jubilant supporters of
Matibenga singing and dancing early evening on Tuesday
after the confirmation of Matibenga as the candidate
for the new constituency created in Kuwadzana.
The party leadership was still locked up going through
the primaries and it was difficult to obtain a lot of
details as spokesman Nelson Chamisa was not available
to comment.
However, Matibenga briefly said to this reporter,
“Yes, I have been confirmed and that is why my people
are celebrating”.
She has rediscovered herself on the political arena
through the nomination, having spent several months in
oblivion after her ouster from the party’s position of
Women’s Assembly chairperson, which was taken over by
Theressa Makoni under controversial circumstances.
Matibenga fought against her ouster by even taking the
party to court but losing in the process.
The MDC was on Tuesday evening conducting its primary
elections under a very tense atmosphere at Harvest
House, where supporters of various candidates were in
heavy presence anxiously awaiting the results.
Information provided by sources who were privy to the
goings-on suggested that there had been controversy
over the primary for Harare North, where Makoni was
locked up against Jameson Timba and Jessie Majome.
