No Zanu manifesto yet

HARARE - Zanu (PF) was by beginning of this week still battling to produce an elections manifesto, and top sources in the ruling party said there was confusion over what exactly the beleaguered party could use to appeal to the electorate after sustained failure and utter destruction of the country's economy.

President Robert Mugabe-who is seeking re-election against all odds and reasonability-last week said the party’s secretary for information, Nathan Shamuyarira was still finalizing on the manifesto. Mugabe, who was jointly celebrating his 84th birthday last Saturday, launched his campaign without a manifesto.

“The manifesto should have been ready last month but there was debate over what exactly would be the campaign base,” a senior official speaking on condition of anonymity said Monday. “That is when it was suggested that we could wait and hope for the coming of agricultural equipment imported from China and other countries.”

Zanu (PF) political commissar told The Zimbabwean that his party “has everything to tell the electorate and convince them to vote for us. We are a people’s party and have proved that all along. The manifesto is almost ready and is based on our nature as a people’s party.”

Rhetoric about non-existent sanctions, war against imperialism and neo-colonialism as well as the land reform programme, have been the hallmarks of Mugabe and his party’s campaign messages over the past eight years, laced with virulent attacks on opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai as well as US and UK leaders.
