The Zimbabwean: Makoni’s Presidential Candidacy

The Zimbabwean: Makoni's Presidential Candidacy

Is Makoni an Opportunist?

The political, economical and social situation in Zimbabwe is really in a pathetically sad state.

For this country to be retrieved from the dogs to which it has literally gone it needs positive political maturity, sanity and altruism to prevail. With no any reasonable doubt, the opposition, like the ZANU PF government lacks almost all of the above credentials which are what is desperately needed for the return of normalcy in Zimbabwe. If Dr. Simba Makoni, as it has been officially reported that he is going to stand as an independent presidential candidate, is really serious about saving Zimbabwe from the vultures of ZANU PF, he must not take advantage of the desperation of the people of Zimbabwe to advance his personal political ambitions like what we have seen happening in the main opposition party, leading to the divisions hence with. Mr. Makoni must not take Zimbabweans for a ride by being a double agent on a mission to confuse the already confused people of Zimbabwe.
I have no doubt that Mr. Makoni is a man of very high credibility and I personally revere him for the caliber of a man he is and for the stance he has taken if it was taken with the Zimbabweans at heart. However, I have some concerns about Mr. Makoni’s seriousness, or should I say lack of it, regarding his wish to be the much needed saviour for the down trodden Zimbabweans; Before going it solo, did Mr. Makoni try to meet the opposition parties to try and reason out some working relations or a coalition with them? Did he consider that going it solo might confuse the electorate that has long been loyal to the MDC and at the same time may regard him valuable to the struggle of change? I think if he was really serious from the bottom of his heart he would have considered having a coalition with the MDC as they have also dedicated their lives and time for the same cause he has chosen to rebel from his masters. I’m aware that there may be some differences in ideologies and pol
icies but that is where positive political maturity and sanity should come in so that a compromise can be reached for the sake of the suffering people of Zimbabwe. Lastly, why has Mr. Makoni only broken out from ZANU PF on the eve of an election’ so to borrow Tafataona Mahoso’s phrase; does that not point at something like personal ambitions and opportunists. Food for thought.
