Gumbo prepares to celebrate

MBERENGWA
In a move widely viewed as vote buying, the Zanu (PF) aspiring Member of Parliament for Mberengwa West, Jorum Gumbo, last week bought five cattle, which are expected to be slaughtered in each of the constituent's five wards in anticipation of victory in this weekend's harmonized elections.

Gumbo has already paid some of the beasts that were bought from the locals.

Villagers in the area told The Zimbabwean on Sunday:

“One of the beasts was bought last week from a villager called Gift Masukume at a cost of Z$1,5 billion. Gumbo has told the villagers that the beasts will be slaughtered after the March 29 elections for celebrating the MP and Zanu (PF)’s anticipated victory bin the polls,” said Silas Dube, a villager in Ngava Ward.

Masukume confirmed that he had sold the MP the beast but professed ignorance of the purpose of the beast, referring questions to Gumbo who could not be reached for comment.

“We are not fools who can be bought by meat. People are suffering and we need long-term benefits to our lives rather than meat. This is clear vote buying,” said Milos Sando, an MDC activist in the area.

In 2000 elections aspiring Zanu (PF) candidate for Kwekwe central, Emmerson Mnangangwa, after loosing the elections put soil in pots of  meat that had been prepared in anticipation of his victory, accusing his supporters of misleading him about his chances of winning the polls.
