NUST Students Demonstrate...as student leader is brutalised

Suspected members of the notorious spy agency, the Central Intelligence Organisation reportedly brutalised the Information and Publicity Secretary of the National University of Science and Technology (NUST) after a demonstration of about 200 students on campus today.

Brian Mtisi, a second year Finance student, was trapped as he boarded private transport to town from College.Mtisi was amongst a group of 8 students who had been offered a lift to town by unidentified men  driving a green Isuzu Pick Up truck, single cab.  Speaking from Bulawayo after being assaulted with iron bars, boots and and fists, Mtisi, who sustained deep lacerations on his neck, said
“We became suspicious when the car started speeding, driving through red robots, that is when we jumbed out of the car when we were entering town, but the men gave chase and caught up with me, they were two of them. They immediately started assaulting me with iron bars, clenched fists and boots, chiding me that what the students at NUST are demanding is too much, the government cannot be able to meet those demands, tisu tiri panyanga (we are in charge). All this happened in town, after assaulting him, they bundled him back into the truck, and threatened to sent him to jail, but Mtisi jumped again.  The unidentified assailants ransacked him, and took his cell-phone, identity particulars and shoes. The students were demanding that the government re-introduces the loan system in the country, since the cost of education is becoming beyond reach of most students.  Tuition fees for this year have been hiked to anything between $Z500million to $Z1billion, all this against the background of the government funding 481 students this for studies in South Africa, the students hold.
“If the government can pay for air-fares, food, accommodation and general upkeep of these few students, paying in foreign currency, then why should they fail to fund education in Zimbabwe, after all they are using tax-payer’s money”, quipped one student.
The students also demanded that learning infrastructure at the College be improved, and also demanded better service delivery in terms of food and accommodation at the campus.
Mtisi is currently being attended to by doctors in Bulawayo.
