...while Zanu lets its die

Web-savvy opposition leaders are turning to cyberspace to help them in their presidential campaigns. Not so the 84-year-old outgoing president, Robert Mugabe or the fourth candidate, Langton Tawungana.

Makoni recently launched his website (www.simbamakoni.co.zw) and immediately embarked on an online campaign programme. Tsvangirai is using his party’s website (www.mdc.co.zw), which was re-branded and launched late last year.

Mugabe seems not to have a website of his own and the Zanu (PF) site has – like the nation’s economy – been abandoned and left to die. It still says that Simon Muzenda is the Vice-President of the party and the country, more than four years after the death of the former war veteran.

The MDC website is a colourful affair with constantly changing pictures of the party leadership, supporters and crowds at recent rallies. A section is dedicated to Tsvangirai and includes his profile as well as a chat link through which he can communicate with party supporters and answer their questions. Other links include the party’s press releases, news stories and Tsvangirai’s speeches and press statements.

The party’s election manifesto is also included on the website with links to download the document.

Makoni’s website also includes his manifesto, themed “Zimbabwe must work again”, which lays out his plans to revive the malfunctioning economic, social and political systems in the country and has links to the specific sectors such as mining and agriculture.

There is also information on Makoni’s personal background and achievements, along with news, a photo gallery and speeches.

Tawungana seems to have no website and efforts to contact him were in vain.
