Rally for Dinity and Democracy in Zimbabwe

Rally for Dignity and Democracy in Zimbabwe, Saturday 8th March
Action for Southern Africa (ACTSA) is holding a Rally for Dignity and Democracy in Zimbabwe in Trafalgar Square, London, on International Women's Day, Saturday 8th March 2008 from 12pm-1.30pm. 


3 weeks ahead of elections, it is a chance to support the right to dignity and freedom from violence for the Women of Zimbabwe, through the Dignity! Period. campaign, support the efforts by civil society for free and fair elections as well as calling for international solidarity to support the struggle for democracy in Zimbabwe.                                 The Rally will feature a range of high profile speakers including:

1         Lucia Matibenga, Vice-President, Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions

2        Takavafira Zhou, President, Progressive Teachers Union of Zimbabwe

3        Maureen Kademaunga, Gender and Human Rights Officer, Zimbabwe National Students’ Union

4         Brendan Barber, General Secretary, TUC

5        Sally Keeble MP, All Party Parliamentary Group on Zimbabwe

 ACTSA Director Tony Dykes said, The Rally will be a chance for leaders from civil society to express their concerns about the pending elections as they are unable to speak out in Zimbabwe without fear of being arrested and brutalised by state forces.Takavafira Zhou, President PTUZ, was last week a victim of State violence when he was beaten for handing out fliers on the state of the education system in Bulawayo.  Action for Southern Africa (ACTSA) is the successor organisation to the Anti-Apartheid Movement. Since 1994 ACTSA has been campaigning with the people of Southern Africa as they strive to build a better future, working for peace, democracy and development across the region. http://www.actsa.org/   The economic collapse in Zimbabwe has made the essentials of sanitary products unaffordable. ACTSA, through its Dignity! Period campaign is working with the Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions to raise awareness and funds to supply the women and girls of Zimbabwe with sanitary products to protect their health and go some way to restoring their dignity.
