It was against a background of ZANU PF’s continued record of stealing elections that the students union saw it fit to have its members on the ground and query anomalies emanating from these elections. In the 2002 Presidential elections the country witnessed a flagrant, egregious and fundamentally flawed electoral process. About 11,000 student poling officials were deployed in various centres around the country with at least one poling agent, one election observer at each polling station countrywide. We are closely watching and observing the elections with an eagle eye and we want to ensure that we have open free and fair elections and this goes in with one of our demands of a democratic Zimbabwe. The run up to 29 March saw the students’ union initiating a GO VOTE campaign whose multifaceted strategy including the establishment of five Communication Centres in Harare, Bulawayo, Midlands, Manicaland and Masvingo regional offices whose main objective was to provide a communication interface that educate and inform the electorate on key need issues concerning the forthcoming March 29 elections and wholesomely encourage people of Zimbabwe to go and vote. The fully-fledged Communication Centres shall feed into the National Coordinating Command Centre and shall remain operational post elections.Â
