Cops lead rural retribution campaign

BULAWAYO - Police officers have been deployed in the country's rural districts to lead Robert Mugabe's campaign of retribution against the rural electorate, which traditionally followed the geriatric leader, but turned around to back Morgan Tsvangirai and the MDC in last month's watershed election.

Police sources told The Zimbabwean that members of the paramilitary Support Unit and some undercover police officers, most of who were drawn from the Police Internal Security Intelligence (PISI) and the Criminal Investigations Department’s (CID) Law and Order section, were deployed in the rural areas during the past two weeks, to “assist” in campaigning for Mugabe, as the 84-year-old desperately seeks to turn around his waning political fortunes in the anticipated Presidential election run-off with Tsvangirai.
