Sources within both the ZEC and Mugabe’s Zanu (PF) last week told The Zimbabwean on Sunday that the junta has ordered ZEC to continue finding scapegoats, after the recount showed Mugabe had lost a decisive majority to Tsvangirai.
The sources revealed that although the re-run had appeared possible after the first counting process, a series of verifications and recounts had given the MDC leader a decisive majority which allowed him to be declared president.
Mugabe shot himself on the foot when he ordered that the presidential election should go through a re-count of votes because now he is trying to find an escape route. The next thing will be for the result to continue being withheld on flimsy excuses until some of the material is declared lost, thereby allowing him to nullify the results and order a re-run. As it stands now, he has clearly lost the vote, said a senior source within the ZEC, who requested not to be named.
Tsvangirai and his party have maintained that the MDC leader won a decisive vote and that there was no need for a second round of voting, but both Zanu (PF) and independent observers had said that neither of the two got the required vote to lead the country.
However, sources last week said that, after the original count gave Tsvangirai a slender lead, a recount gave him a clear and conclusive lead.
Another recount was then carried out, which showed the same result, and at this point, the Zanu (PF) officials stepped in to demand that the results should not be announced.
Other sources said that Mugabe was under pressure to ignore calls by even SADC to release the results, as he had lost total control over the country to the junta.
