Registrars' office fails to produce IDs :BULAWAYO

A serious breakdown of machines and lack of resources is forcing the national registration office in Bulawayo to take more than two weeks to process paper identification passes.

Under normal circumstances, it should take a day to release a green paper ID. The registration office had already been failing to process and issue metal IDs.Most of the machines that we have are ageing and are constantly breaking down resulting in us failing to issue the paper IDs in less than a week, said a worker at the office.Another worker added: At the same time, the government faces under-funding and does not have foreign currency to purchase spare parts for the ageing machines or to acquire new machines for processing the IDs.Samantha Mpofu said: I have been coming to the national registration office but I have been constantly told that the paper ID is not yet ready for collection. No comment could be obtained from Tobaiwa Mudede, the national registration boss about the matter. The national registration office is hamstrung by foreign currency shortages, resulting in it failing to issue passports, metal IDs and birth certificates.
