More than 10 villagers have been beaten up in Nyamandlovu, a rural district about 52km north-west of Bulawayo, after they failed to attend Zanu (PF) meetings organised by rogue war veterans and youth militia.
As the terror campaign continues unabated, villagers who spoke to The Zimbabwean on Sunday this week revealed that the gangs, who are camped at households in the district, organised daily meetings during which they vilify the Movement

They want every villager to attend the meetings, but we cannot attend all of those because we have other commitments. So I failed to attend one of the meetings and they stormed my homestead and beat me up with sjamboks all over my body, said a villager who requested not to be named. They accused me of being a sell-out who voted for the MDC.

The terror gangs, who seem to be immune from arrest by the Zimbabwean police, whose Commissioner General Augustine Chihuri is a self-proclaimed Zanu (PF) supporter and war veteran, are also said to have given a local white farmer a five-day ultimatum to leave his farm, or face dire consequences.

The gangs have also sealed off the area, demanding Zanu (PF) party membership cards from strangers.

Although the farmer could not be reached for comment, some of his workers confirmed that he had been ordered to leave the farm.

They said that they cannot continue living with sell-outs and ordered him to be out of this place by Saturday (yesterday). They threatened to burn down his house and even kill him if he continues to stay here. They also accused him of being racist, said one farm worker.

At the height of farm evictions in 2000, the war veterans murdered two white farmers, Gloria Olds and her son in Nyamandlovu.

The villagers said that the war veterans were claiming to be working under the instructions of their national chairman, Jabulani Sibanda, and Umguza Member of Parliament Obert Mpofu in their terror campaign.

Mpofu, who is also the former Minister of Industry and International Trade, could not be reached for comment.
