Jairos Nyadaufe, the party’s area chairperson told CAJ News on Friday that at least two MDC faithfuls, Elia Dickson, and Violet Mapali, chairlady for Ward 31 have been admitted with assault wounds from the beatings at Mutare Provincial General Hospital.Â
Odzi, which is 40km west of the eastern border city of Mutare, is home to mostly farm workers, who voted overwhelmingly for the opposition MDC despite the party’s loss of a parliamentary seat of Mutare North to Zanu PF’s Charles Pemhenayi.Â
“The soldiers from Grand Reef army base are tormenting MDC members. We are no longer allowed to move at night after 5pm, implying they have introduced a curfew in our area,” said Nyadaufe. Â
He said despite a police report, the police have not reacted to the report.Â
Newly elected parliamentarian representing Mutasa South Misheck Tofa Kagurabadza of the opposition MDC has also complained to the police of party members being assaulted by soldiers in his constituency.Â
Kagubadza said at least 17 MDC members had been injured in the hands of the soldiers in Penhalonga.Â
“The soldiers are beating people for flimsy reason such as celebrating the election of MDC councilors and MPs. Seventeen people have been injured and are being hospitalized,” said Kagurabadza. Â
He added the police are aware of the beatings as police report was made. Police in Mutare confirmed they had received a report and were investigating.
