This is ample proof of Africa’s impotence when it comes to solving African problems. Mbeki has stubbornly pushed the line that Africa should be left alone to solve its own problems. Well in the case of Zimbabwe, African leaders have failed to solve the problem. The evidence is there for all to see.
They have remained quiet while hordes of Mugabe’s thugs have rampaged throughout the country for a month, leaving a trail of corpses, raped women, brutalized children, broken bones and battered bodies.
With elections due in a month’s time their so called election monitors are not even on the ground to witness what is going on. In any case, they have totally discredited themselves and Africa by pronouncing the March 29 elections free and fair.
Even Mugabe himself has said those elections were not free and fair. Both Zanu (PF) and MDC have lodged court objections claiming that the elections were fraudulent. The situation in Zimbabwe is obviously not conducive to free and fair elections. There has been a large scale replacement of MDC supporters in the rural areas. We don’t even know that Mugabe is prepared to accept the results of the run-off.
His generals have not retracted their statements made before the first elections that they would not accept Morgan Tsvangirai as president. So why bother with the run-off?We all know Mugabe has an insatiable lust for power, matched only by that of his henchmen and the thievocracy that surrounds them.
The so-called commissioner of police, Augustine Chihuri, continues to insult our intelligence with his pontifications about maintaining law and order, when his own officers, on his own orders, are at the forefront of disregarding the law and causing disorder in the country.
If anybody is serious about running credible elections, the UN will have to be called in to supervise them- not the discredited pro-Mugabe sycophants at The Zimbabwe Electoral Commission. The way they conducted the last election was an unmitigated disaster, and they certainly cannot be relied upon to tally the votes cast in the run-off in an efficient transparent manner. Will we have to wait another month for the results?
It is imperative that the international community intervenes in Zimbabwe now.Proper elections must be held. Africa has had its chance and has failed. We appeal to the United Nations – do not stand by and allow another Rwanda.Please.
Word for Today
Once you were alienated from God and were enemies in your minds because of your evil behaviour. But now he has reconciled you by Christ’s physical body through death to present you holy in his sight, without blemish and free from accusation – if you continue in your faith, established and firm, not moved from the hope held out in the gospel. This is the gospel that you heard and that has been proclaimed to every creature under heaven. Colossians 1:21-23.
