Cops arrest MDC but not Zanu (PF)

GWANDA - Police last week arrested three Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) councillors in Matabeleland South on charges of leading opposition party supporters to revolt against Zanu (PF) thugs that were terrorizing villagers at a business centre.

Police have not attempted to arrest even one of the assailants.Mandla Sibanda, Raymond Ngwebu and Lloyd Mpofu, councillors for three wards in Wanezi, were arrested by police following the subsequent violent clashes between the two sets of political party supporters after MDC supporters revolted against the Zanu (PF) militia.Violent clashes reportedly took place at Manama business centre after the thugs went on an intimidation spree against revellers and villagers.

MDC supporters did not take kindly to intimidation, however, and fought back against the militia to defend the defenceless villagers and stopped the thugs in their tracks.Matabeleland South provincial secretary for the MDC, Petros Mukwena, confirmed the arrests when contacted for comment on May 8.
Police arrested the councillors and later pressed charges against them saying they incited their supporters to fight back and defend themselves against the marauding Zanu (PF) thugs, said Mukwena.
No comment could be obtained on the matter from Matabeleland South police spokesperson, Inspector Tafanana Dzirutwe.
