MDC President condemns xenophobic attacks

Johannesburg: The Movement for Democratic Change is shocked by the callous and brutal attacks on foreign nationals living in South Africa. This spate of attacks has escalated dramatically over the past week and Zimbabweans are bearing the brunt of the violence.

MDC President, Morgan Tsvangirai, applauded the South African government, the ANC and the Nelson Mandela Foundation’s condemnation of the attacks and called for the mobilization of all available resources to protect these innocent civilians.

“We must all remember that in southern Africa we are united by a shared history and we have much more in common than we have differences. The MDC believes in African solidarity and regional integration and condemns those self-serving elements behind these attacks on foreign nationals”, President Tsvangirai said.

He noted that the violence suffered by Zimbabweans is even more appalling when we remember that these refugees are not here out of choice, but instead are already victims of violence and economic hardship inflicted upon them by the Mugabe regime.

“The Zimbabwean crisis is impacting economically, socially and politically on all countries in the region. My party is committed to working with SADC, and South Africa in particular,  to address the real cause of the crisis and to work towards resolving it in an honest, transparent and democratic manner”, President Tsvangirai said.
