Suspected Zim.sex workers sent packing

LUSAKA

Zambia's Immigration Department has sent back 60 Zimbabweans suspected of engaging in sex work in the country following a raid on guesthouses in Livingstone.

Immigration public relations officer Mulako Mbangweta said in Lusaka that her department, in conjunction with the Zambia Police Service, apprehended 86 people, among them Zambians, for allegedly engaging in prostitution in the tourist capital.

Mbangweta said the operation was aimed at getting rid of alleged sex workers who have invaded guesthouses and other hospitality houses.

She said the 20 Zambians who were among those arrested had been charged with public nuisance, while the rest were released after being screened.

Mbangweta expressed concern at the increased influx of alleged Zimbabwean sex workers into the tourist city.

She described the trend as saddening and said that the situation could endanger the lives of many Zambians if left unchecked.

Mbangweta called upon stakeholders in the fight against illicit practices, such as the Zambia Tourist Board (ZTB), to help curb prostitution through intensified inspections of guesthouses to ensure they adhered to the guidelines.
