Mugabe buys votes with tractors…

...and restricts voters to diet of ZTV

Robert Mugabe rolled out his election master plan last week, beginning the distribution of 3,000 grinding mills, 3,000 beasts, hundreds of tractors, and farm machinery to Zanu (PF) loyalists.

Generators were also being distributed in rural areas in what could be seen as an embarrassing admission of the failure of the Mugabe government’s rural electrification programme.

The vote-buying campaign also includes the distribution of candle and soap-making machines and oil presses to rural communities.

The Zimbabwean heard that the country’s 266 traditional chiefs, as well as receiving brand new trucks, had their allocations of fuel raised to 200 litres a month.

Rural communities with satellite dishes were also being ordered to remove the receivers to effectively confine their viewing to a diet of state-run ZTV. A Mbare-based Zanu (PF) vigilante group, Chipangano, was last week instructing residents of the township to remove their satellite dishes.
