Observers’ comments

HARARE, - The African observer mission to Zimbabwe's widely-condemned presidential run-off said today (Sunday) that fresh elections should be organised because the vote had not been free, fair or credible.

“Conditions should be put in place for the holding of free, fair and credible elections as soon as possible in line with the African Union declaration on the principles governing democratic elections,” said Marwick
Khumalo, head of an observer team from the Pan-African Parliament.

Khumalo said his group was calling on regional bodies like Southern African Development Community and the African Union, which is holding a summit meeting in Egypt from tomorrow, to organise the talks between the military junta running Zimbabwe and Morgan Tsvangiria’s Movement for Democratic Change which won control of the lower house of parliament during the March elections.
