Persecution rages on

HARARE, IT seems it's not just Morgan Tsvangirai and his Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) supporters that are being subjected to intimidation by Zimbabwean leader Robert Mugabe's government.

Former Member of Parliament for Harare North, Trudy Stevenson, a member of the MDC faction-led by Arthur Mutambara, claims to be under siege from the ruling ZANU-PF party members.

“Some ZANU-PF youths camped in front of my home gate over the weekend. I alerted the police but they didn’t do anything about it.

“Yesterday (Sunday) around 1.30 pm a new white pick-up truck without number plates stopped at my gate and two men – one in police uniform and the other in civilian clothing – disembarked from it.

“They rang the bell but we did not answer it in fear and they went away,” she said.

Stevenson said she was now scared that sooner or later her house might be attacked, most probably petrol-bombed, as part of government’s violence against opposition members.

“Anything can happen now. I just have to hire a security company to guard my family. I live with my husband Jim and two workers,” she added.

In July 2006, after attending a political meeting in the Harare suburb of Mabvuku, Stevenson survived death by a whisker after she was severely attacked by ZANU-PF supporters.

Tsvangirai, leader of the main MDC and his supporters, are being terrorised by ZANU-PF members, and the other opposition parties, which have no meaningful following, have relatively been living in peace.
