Police impose curfew in area of worst violence

A dusk-to-dawn curfew has been imposed in Bikita and Zaka, a police spokesman has confirmed.

The two districts have seen some of the worst violence, which has claimed the lives of seven MDC supporters, five of them in petrol-bomb attacks on party offices.

The curfew does not apply to Zanu (PF) militia and war veterans, who are reported to be looting food and property from villagers in the area.

“We have imposed this curfew to ensure that property is protected together with the lives of ordinary people,” said the officer commanding Masvingo East, Chief Supt Letwin Matapura.

MDC supporters who have gone to the police to report acts of violence by Zanu (PF) say the police have told them to avenge themselves. In most cases, the police refused to record details of the attacks against the MDC.
