The activists were at the Ecumenical Support Services office when the police arrived. The latter group raided the office, which houses Student Christian Movement of Zimbabwe (SCMZ) and Youth Agenda where the activists were going on with their day-to-day activities. One police car arrived at the office and parked inside for about half an hour, after which an armored truck with armed police arrived at the office and led the activists into a combi and the police truck. They were then driven to the police station where they are at the moment.
This comes in the backdrop of a suspension on all Non-Governmental Organisations by the Zimbabwean Government on allegations that they are being used as tools to campaign for the Movement for DemocraticÂ Change.Â ROHR Zimbabwe condemns these wanton attacks on civil society and the Government’s latest attempts to draw attention away from the real crisis that the country is in by creating a new crisis.Â Zimbabwe is sinking further into an abyss of lawlessness and fundamental human rights are constantly being ignored. There is need for intervention so that the country can return to the rule of law.
