The Final Straw in Zimbabwe?: Reaction to Recent

By Scott A Morgan

Events

The People of Zimbabwe have run the entire Gambit of Emotions since the Initial Presidential Poll in Zimbabwe took place on March 29th.

After an Initial State of Euphoria after the Political opposition wrestled control of Parliament away from the ruling ZANU-PF the feelings turned to despair as the results of the Presidential Contest were Gradually Released.          During the Time between the release of the “Official Results” that had Morgan Tsvangari winning the First Round alhtough not with a Majority of Cast Ballots. The Incumbent Robert Mugabe came in Second Place.  While the votes were being tallied the Tension within Zimbabwe could be cut with a Knife. One could easily assume that the Ruling Party ZANU-PF and their backers in the Security Forces were Consolidating Power.
The Runup towards June 29th runoff was violent. Dozens of Opposition Supporters were killed in that period. Organizations that provide Food to those who need it were forced to Cease Operations within the Country. Trade Unionists were arrested during that period. Several Rallies that were Organized by the MDC (Movement for Democratic Change)were broken up by Security Forces. One Senior MDC Official is facing Treason Charges at this time.
During this latest Period of Violence there were several Organizations concerned about who was actually calling the shots within Zimbabwe. Several Diplomatic Missions that were out in the field conducting investigations were accosted by State Security Forces. Human Rights Watch released a Report indicating that the JOC (Joint Operations Command) Which comprises the Senior Leadership of the Military, Police and the Intelligence Services were not only running the Presidential Campaign of Candidate Mugabe but the Country as well.
The last week of the Campaign appears to have had the most stress induced on the Zimbabwe People. It also appears to have finally galvanized both Regional Actors and the International Community to take some action regarding Zimbabwe. The UN Security Council has called for the end of Violence against Supporters of the Opposition and to recgonize the results of the March 29th Ballots to be considered legitimate.
Several African States are concerned over the current state of Affairs within Zimbabwe. Some are calling for the Runoff to be postponed and others warn of a potential Civil War. President Mugabe has been Adamant that the runoff will take place on June 27th despite the withdrawal of the Opposition Candidate. The Attacks against the Opposition were just too violent to have this runoff considered to be Free and Fair under International Standards.
The Immediate Future for Zimbabwe can be seen as very bleak. There have been several other Op-Eds stating that a Coup taking place within Zimbabwe may be a benefit/ to the Country. So for now the country is on edge and the International Community is concerned about the violence. But it doesn’t appear willing to do anything concrete about it.
