Youth Forum Member attacked

Zanu PF youth militia burned down the home of a prominent Youth Forum member on Wednesday (18 June 2008) in Chipinge central.

The member, Cathrine Mkwapati was not at home when the incident took place and was only alerted of the arson by neighbors who contacted her on her mobile phone whilst she was away. It is reported that the attackers broke down the windows of her house on Tuesday 17 June and came back the following day at around 2pm and torched the house, destroying property worth trillions of dollars and a Mitsubishi Lancer vehicle that was parked at her house.

4 weeks before the torching of her house, about 30 armed Zanu PF militia and police visited her house, but could not locate her as she had already run away and sought shelter at a nearby household after being tipped of the scam by some of the Zanu PF youth militias and police force members. This took place after the arrest of some Youth Forum members who include Chenjerai Hunzvi, MDC Chipinge district chairman and Stanley Mabuyane, MDC Chipinge district information officer. Currently Zanu PF youth militia and police are looking for Godfrey Nyarota another Youth Forum contact person in Chipinge whose whereabouts are not yet known since the beginning of June.

Meanwhile police in Chipinge have arrested more than 50 people including those who were polling officers and election agents for the opposition MDC and some who were independent observers from Zimbabwe Election Support Network (ZESN). Perceived MDC supporters are being forced to admit charges they did not commit so that they can be released. Those arrested have had their national identification documents confisticated and are being forced to take part in the daily Zanu PF activities that include toyi-toying and attacks on MDC members.
