Zaka Massacre

News Alert 19:14 Wednesday 4 June 2008

While President Morgan Tsvangirai and the party's Vice-President and Chairman continue to be unlawfully detained at Lupane police station, reports are reaching MDC Headquarters of a massacre of party supporters at Jerera in Zaka district in Masvingo Province, 3 hours south of Harare.

Eyewitnesses reported that seven party supporters were sleeping in the local MDC office when a group of unidentified militia broke in around midnight and open fire with automatic weapons. The militia then used petrol to set alight the bodies of the dead and injured before fleeing the scene.

Police in the area are refusing to investigate the incident.

In addition, a ward chairman and two other MDC party members were abducted from Chiredzi south at 2.00am this morning. With the death toll of MDC supporters now at 65 since March, the MDC is extremely concerned about the wellfare of these individuals and the many who are still missing or in police detention.
