ZCTU PRESS RELEASE

SUBJECT: ZCTU leaders' Vice President elected into the International Labour  Labour Organisation (ILO) Governing Body

The Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions (ZCTU) 1st Vice-President, Ms Lucia Gladys Matibenga has been elected into the Governing body of the International Labour Organisation (ILO) at the ongoing ILO Annual Conference in Geneva, Switzerland.

Ms Matibenga was elected yesterday, 2 June 2008, after receiving 107 votes from the delegates.

The ILO Governing body is responsible for guiding the ILO between conferences. It also takes decisions on actions to give effect to the ILO policy, prepares the draft programme and budget which it then submits to the Conference for adoption. It also elects the Director General of the ILO.

The ZCTU is proud that one of its leaders has been recognized for her unwavering fight for workers' and human rights and hopes that MS Matibenga's election will ensure that matters relating to workers and human rights will get maximum attention at the ILO.

Meanwhile, Zimbabwe is set to appear before the Application of Standards Committee to answer charges of contravening ILO Conventions 87 and 98 which deals with Freedom of Expression and Association while.

The ZCTU is represented at the ILO by President Lovemore Matombo and secretary-General Wellington Chibebe.
