GERMISTON - Zimbabweans from all walks of life are gathering every Sunday 11am at Germiston Methodist church to worship in Shona.

This is the first mainline church to offer a traditional spiritual environment.
It started when five Zimbabweans became part of the church in 2007: Shepherd Kombo and Togarepi Chivaviro, former Methodist Church preachers. They recognized a need and asked the resident minister Reverend Gavin Landers if they could start a church service in Shona. The idea was approved and the first service was held on January 20 with 24 attendants. The membership now stands at 104 as more and more find a sense of community when things are falling apart in their home country. The congregation is heavily involved in the Germiston crisis centre since the outbreak of xenophobic attacks.
We really thank Rev Landers and the Germiston Central Methodist Church for allowing this special ministry to take place. We have had people coming from Alberton, Katlehong, Joburg, Boksburg, Midrand and even from as far afield as Pretoria, just to come together in worship and prayer, especially for our country and all victims of xenophobia here. We continue to invite more Zimbabweans. Together we can really make a difference, Pastor Chivariro said.
