HARARE – The MDC reports that 55 Zanu (PF) torture bases, staffed with party youths, militia and war vets, are still operational around the country. This is despite the signing of the memorandum of understanding between the two main parties last week in which all concerned condemned violence and pledged to put at end to it.
Comprehensive reports compiled by the MDC in Manicaland and Masvingo show that activities at the bases continue unabated – including interrogation and punishing of returning MDC supporters who fled political violence. The bases also serve as vetting centres for people who want to leave their wards to visit or to seek medical attention for injuries sustained at the hands of Mubabe’s thugs.
“People are virtually being held prisoner in their home areas – unable to move without permission from Zanu (PF) officials. It’s unbelievable,” said an independent analyst.
The location of the bases and the names of those in charge (where known) are as follows:

Zaka Ward 5 – Chenjerai Munhungowarwa, Simbarashe Chimurivo, Jefita Mavhenyengwa, Richard Vhovha, Taison Chandiregera, Alex Makinenzva, Musiiwa Mauta, Jelous Togarepi, Alex Tivabarire and Handifari Mufandaidza – These are the people who are threatening those returning from hiding to pay a fine either in cash or kind.
