Matamisa spent a night in custody after she had gone to the police to report that her Chief election agent David Sapenda had been abducted by Zanu (PF) thugs and was being held at the party office. Matamisa was arrested with 21 others including Felix Zifunze, the MDC provincial Elections Director.
Zanu (PF) thugs abducted Sapenda from his home in Rimuka and dragged him all the way to the party office. Opposition activists mobilised and went to the Zanu (PF) party office. Sources said heavy fighting broke out as the MDC activists fought to rescue their colleague. The MDC supporters managed to free Sapenda before taking him to hospital.
While the violence was taking place MDC officials said Matamisa was at Kadoma Central police station meeting Superintendent Machina. The MP and Zifunze were then referred to Rimuka police station where they were arrested.
The 21 appeared in at the Kadoma magistrate’s courts on June 20 and were remanded until June 25. Matamisa and Zifunze were cleared by the court after the state failed to prove their charge against them. They were represented by defense lawyer Mafirakureva of Mafirakureva and Associates and Prayers Chitsa of Mukushi Maupa, Foroma and partners.
In other cases ward 14 councillor Masarakufa Sibanda and four others were abducted by Zanu (PF) in Ingezi suburb. The three were assaulted and dumped at Rimuka police station, accused of attacking the Zanu (PF) office.
Attacks on the homes of Jochore Erasnus of ward 17 and Hubert Gava of ward 14 in Waverly were also reported. The two were not injured as they were not at home at the time of the attack. The Kadoma Chairman for the MDC said the two, like many other activists, were not staying in their homes for fear of being abducted and tortured. Supporters of the desperate regime have now resorted to attacking and abducting supporters in the afternoon as police watch.
