To the cowards who burn newspapers

(The Zim.issue 21)

Editorial:

To the armed cowards who burn newspapers

To the eight armed cowards who, under cover of darkness, ambushed the 14-ton truck carrying the precious cargo of 60,000 copies of Africa Day issue of The Zimbabwean on Sunday and reduced both truck and cargo to ashes - I hope you are proud of yourselves. Do you feel like heroes now? Did you enjoy seeing the truth going up in smoke?

As you fired the volley of shots from your newly-acquired AK-47 rifles did you feel a sense of power? Did you believe you were in control of your own destiny?
Did you believe that your actions would change the course of history? And as you thrashed the defenceless driver and his assistant, Christmas Ramabulana and Tapfumaneyi Kancheta, with you shiny new rifle butts – did you feel like men? Did the flames give you courage in the darkness that night? As you stole Ramabulana’s nice new shoes, and tried them on for size – how did you feel? Were they comfortable? As you stole their shirts and left them shivering in the winter’s night did you feel warmer? And later, when you got home and your family feasted on the few packets of groceries looted from the drivers – did you feel like a good breadwinner?
Does the radio you stole from the truck fit nicely in your car?
The truth of the matter is that you are nothing but scum – you and those above you whose orders you carry out so unquestioningly.
Zimbabwe does not need people like you – you serve no useful purpose in our society. You may be useful at the moment to those in power – but their days are numbered, and so are yours. You engage in violence to justify your miserable existence – but it will get you nowhere. And then what will you do?
You may have disrupted the distribution of one issue of The Zimbabwean on Sunday – but rest assured that we will leave no stone unturned to find out who you are and prosecute you to the fullest extent of the law for your dastardly acts.
You may be protected now by those in high places whose bidding you carry out, but you will not be protected forever. And they will not be in high places forever. We have no doubt about whose orders you were carrying out.
We will not retaliate with violence. In fact, we will turn the other cheek. Through the columns of our newspapers we have unwaveringly advocated peace. We will not change now that we have been directly on the receiving end of your cowardly actions.
This is because we, unlike you, love Zimbabwe and have only its best interests at heart. We long for the day, and believe it is coming soon, when those who govern Zimbabwe, and those who give the orders, are those who love her too.

Blessed is the man who fears the LORD,
       who finds great delight in his commands.
Even in darkness, light dawns for the upright,
       for the gracious and compassionate and righteous man.
 Good will come to him who is generous and lends freely,
       who conducts his affairs with justice.
Surely he will never be shaken;
       a righteous man will be remembered forever.
He will have no fear of bad news;
       his heart is steadfast, trusting in the LORD.
 His heart is secure, he will have no fear;
       in the end he will look in triumph on his foes.
 The wicked man will see and be vexed,
       he will gnash his teeth and waste away;
       the longings of the wicked will come to nothing. – Psalm 112
