Obert Mpofu charges tenants in Rand

BULAWAYO - A number of indigenous business people renting offices in the city, owned by a Zanu (PF) politburo member, are being forced to pay rent in foreign currency.

Under Zimbabwean law, it is illegal to trade in foreign currency and ironically it is the former minister of Industry and International trade, Obert Mpofu, who has been asking tenants in his York House building for their rent in Rand.

“We were threatened with eviction in July after we complained about paying rent in forex,” a tenant said.

No comment could be obtained from Mpofu.

Recently, it was established that a senior Zanu (PF) official and bus owner in Manicaland, Esau Mupfumi, is charging passengers in foreign currency.
