Most people had discarded coins in 2006 when Gono slahed three zero’s again .Coins became valueless and three years later those who had kept them as sourvenirs have become instant reacher.Following a tip off by the members of the public that most dump sites had been invaded by all age groups , this correspondent roof an active interest to find out if it was really true.
The Zimbabwean can confirm it , indeed it was true.THe invasion by these treasure .hunters cut across most of the entire high density suburbs of Harare.The most exciting activity was later on during the end of the day There was brisk business as most businesses confirmed a high turn over of sales.The most flourishing enterprises were bottle stores which ran out of beer , and butcheries again which ran out of meat .This con firmed that most citizens could not access these commodities oftenly.The coin search was dubbed by most residents as operation Bacossi Gono , in which they were ”praising gono for empowering them.Â
Although Tatenda Chawatama and Rangarirai Mugocha both of Warren Park say they did not invade the dump sites , they could not
hide their confirmed feelings of joy as they were drinking beer. The duo had kept their coins since they lost value.
“”Today is my Christmas day and , I have to drink seriously.The price of beer had gone up much and with the re-introduction of the old coins i am safe throughout the weekend.Opportunity knocks once on a man’s door and cheers, ”Tatenda said .Â
At another butchery a woman who only asked to be identified as Amai Francis , confirmed her treasure hunting for the day had paid dividends and blamed school children on the weekend to have disturbed very much.She was however quick to point out at lest she was going to by plenty meat to eat with the family as the family had not afforded it in many past times.She also had her children gone for the treasure hunting and was optimistic they were going to add to the family’s fortune.
Many stories are now abound that for most who had kept the coins in large quantities they managed to buy some properties which they had failed to do so owing to the erosion of the ZIM dollar and perice factor.Â
One of the unconfirmed stories is that one of a Kuwadzana man who managed to by his brother’s coffin with the old coins using the coins the deceased had gathered and kept before he passed away.To date the treasure hunting excursions are still on , inspired by the success stories of those who were so lucky to get much of the old coins.Although the hunting was going on well , fears are abound that there may be an outbreak of diseases from these rubbish dump sites as most of them have accumulated over a long time.Harare city council has been failing to collect refuse for along time time . Most resident’s are sitting on a healthy time bomb which can explode at any given time.
