Best deal ever – under the circumstances

When one considers those who lost their properties, lives and limbs during the period leading to the signing of this historic agreement, it certainly gives an impression that not enough can be said to have been gained by the MDC. However, that would be coming from those who do not understand the tenets of lasting peace and true liberty.

I view this agreement as the greatest achievement for the country. The reason why we are in a mess like the one we are hopefully coming out of at the moment is that the out-come of the Lancaster House did not produce something similar, in terms of a transition period and the opportunity to redraft the constitution. We slept in the comfort of absolute power that suddenly fell upon us, and did not check on our responsibility for shaping our future. Perhaps, we thought that those who had gone through the armed struggle were to be idolized so much as to be entrusted with our future. We forgot that there can never be liberty without responsibility.

This deal will ensure us a future that will usher in a highly responsible government. Just imagine, for a while, a situation where there will be real debating of issues in parliament, as the rubber-stamping will obviously be a thing of the past. Corruption will indeed be weeded out due to antagonistic forces in the cabinet, making it difficult for the continued squandering of public funds.

Checks and balances will be taken care of through the executive reporting to the presidium, who also want to prove a point that Tsvangirai cannot be a good performer.

I honestly see this as the most providential outcome of the talks. I just pray for these guys to make the best use of this opportunity by putting the past behind and forging ahead.

I subscribe to the idea of blanket amnesty. Those who killed others probably didn’t know what they were doing and they need to be freed from that diabolical slavery, so that they may have a new productive life in future. I totally agree with Morgan Tsvangirai that what Zimbabwe needs now, is national healing, rather than retrogressive finger-pointing.

If the MDC had won with a landslide victory, that would have been another disaster for Zimbabwe, as the similar behavioral pattern would have simply transferred to the new ruling class, as greed appeals to anyone, regardless of political affiliation. I, for one, am highly elated by this outcome and I know that greater things are yet to come as to stun the world, as Zimbabwe is poised to become one of the greatest countries in Africa once again. May God bless Zimbabwe.
