Headmen bar registration for food aid

HARARE - Headmen in chief Svosve area near Marondera have threatened families with eviction should they register for food aid from donor organisations through the offices of MDC-sponsored councillors.

“MDC candidates who were voted councillors in the March 29 harmonized elections will never operate in rural areas,” Leader of the Headmen, Rinos Masangomayi said.

He added that any exercise implemented by MDC sponsored councillors would be a non- event. Zanu (PF) ward 20 Chairman, Shepard Zenda, who has been accused of masterminding heinous activities against MDC supporters towards the June 29 run-off, supports Masangomayi’s statement.

The threat comes in the wake of a recent rush by starving peasants to register for aid expected from the World Vision Organisation. Most communal families in Svosve are feeding on wild fruits for survival. Despite the threats, they have vowed to register for the drought relief food.

Svosve was a Zanu (PF) power base but is now predominantly MDC.

According to some locals, the headmen are aware that should the MDC councillors oversee the distribution of donations, there would be no loop holes for corruption and segregation which massively benefited traditional leaders and Zanu (PF) politicians in the past.

Councillors on the MDC ticket have vowed to carry out their duties as entrusted upon them by the electorate. Some MDC supporters in the Mashonaland East Province have described the behaviour of the headmen as unfortunate and a sign of political immaturity.

Villagers have expressed anger over allegations that the Zanu (PF) politicians disposed of tonnes of horded maize seed that had turned bad into local Nyagombere River.

“We hope Tsvangirai as Prime Minister will usher in a new era of transparency and accountable governance free of favoritism,” a housewife said.
